Jocelyn: I feel blessed to have contributed to each season of Sacred Circularities! And, honored to have been a teaching member at the inaugural event in Bali years ago, as well as, the October 2013 gathering in Sedona.
Sacred Circularities has grown in attendance (some events have 50 international guests!) and power. There's an expansion of energy and impact born from the clarity of Jaguar Mary's intention, the vibration of each landscape - Bali & Sedona, the strengths of each teacher and the gift of each participant.
How was this hoop dance event in Sedona different from the Bali events?
Jocelyn: Bali has a very activational quality - it will bring clarity to our life and that may come with a dose of intensity. Sedona's energy was all about connecting to lineage and land. It felt like we were settling into our place in our specific ancestry, as well as, and the tribal collective. My experience in Sedona was deep and enriching.
What was your highlight at the Sedona Sacred Circularities Retreat?
Jocelyn: The opening circle Medicine Wheel was profound for me. It was a perfect and insightful way to welcome the presenters and acknowledge the ancestors of the land. I enjoyed Khan's workshop and the invitation to explore movement outside of the hoop. I was probably most touched in seeing my teaching peers in my HoopYogini™ classes. That made my heart swell. It was also fun to see all participants pleasantly challenged by the HoopYogini™ curriculum. I'm also grateful for the deep places we went in the ThetaHealing Journey and in Malaika's movement classes.
What did you learn about yourself?
Jocelyn: During the retreat, I was going through some self-doubt and judgement about my role in the hoop community. Actually, this dialogue started while teaching at Hoopcamp a week prior. During both events, I experienced immense gratitude for being acknowledged as a teacher and I also acknowledged that my practice/teaching is not about creating new moves and delivering them. Sometimes I thought "What am I doing here? Am I giving this community what it wants?". I was pretty nervous during "performance" times especially after watching my peers and friends bust out their moves.
I can say that I hold great reverence for the role of teacher and the path of leadership. I love integrating various modalities and therapies - yoga, dance, massage - with practical coaching skills to offer a holistic practice. I love training and dancing. I find so much joy in feeling the hoop move around my body sensuously, lovingly, therapeutically. The SC teaching community reminded me that this is full. This is enough.
How will what you learned influence your hoop dance practice and classes?
Jocelyn: I love that our community is so inclusive. There is room for all shapes, sizes and walks of life. There's something for all levels of movement enthusiasts and practioners. My HoopYogini™ offerings truly provide an all levels experience that can create "badass," embodied hoopers in an hour or less, while conditioning the most experienced hoopers. I am curious to explore this more. Regarding my personal practice, I'm feeling called into the martial arts, in particular Capoiera and Bagua. The spiral is inherent in all the wise teachings. I'm curious to expand my circle of movement.
How can hoop enthusiasts cultivate a Sacred Circularities experience in their daily hoop dance practice?
Jocelyn: Make your hoop dance practice a ritual, an offering, a prayer. Enter the circle in unconventional ways and all ways with humility and wonder. Consider your hula hoop a portal, a wand, a safe space. Give yourself permission to be with whatever shows up. Love yourself as you are. And remember, Life is Awesome.
